Epidemiology of chronic rhinosinusitis.

چکیده
PROBLEM OF DEFINITION The discrepancy of definitions results mainly from the use of diVerent criteria such as symptom duration or intensity, the type of selected symptoms, and also from the need for and lack of other exploration methods such as imaging or bacteriological culture. In the definition proposed by the International Conference on Sinus Disease in 1993 the criteria for chronic sinusitis in adults were persistent symptoms and signs for eight weeks or four episodes per year of recurrent acute sinusitis, each lasting at least 10 days, in association with persistent changes on the computed tomographic (CT) scan four weeks after medical treatment without intervening acute infection. The International Consensus Meeting on the Management of Rhinosinusitis in Children held in Brussels in 1996 proposed that two aspects should be taken into account when defining chronic rhinosinusitis: the pathology (infection of the sinus) and the clinical symptoms (low grade symptoms and signs persisting for longer than 12 weeks). We will not discuss nasal polyposis here.

Diagnosis of Allergic Fungal Rhinosinusitis
Background: Allergic fungal sinusitis is a non-invasive disease, and accounts for approximately 6-8% of all chronic sinusitis requiring surgical intervention. As the treatment and prognosis of these disorders vary significantly, it is extremely important to recognize allergic fugal sinusitis and differentiate it from chronic sinusitis of bacterial and fungal origin. This prospective study evalu...
متن کاملEpidemiology and differential diagnosis of nasal polyps
BACKGROUND Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is one of the most common chronic medical conditions, with a significant impact on patient quality of life. CRS is broadly classified into two groups: CRS with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) and CRS without NP (CRSsNP). Clinically, the major subtypes of CRSwNP may be divided into eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (e.g., allergic fungal rhinosinusitis and aspi...
متن کاملThe united allergic airway: Connections between allergic rhinitis, asthma, and chronic sinusitis
BACKGROUND The united allergic airway is a theory that connects allergic rhinitis (AR), chronic rhinosinusitis, and asthma, in which seemingly disparate diseases, instead of being thought of separately, are instead viewed as arising from a common atopic entity. OBJECTIVE This article describes patients with such diseases; explores ideas suggesting a unified pathogenesis; elucidates the variou...
متن کاملEpidemiology of chronic fungal rhinosinusitis in rural India.
A descriptive epidemiological study of fungal rhinosinusitis (FRS) was conducted in rural north India in the form of house-to-house survey of villages of two districts each of Punjab and Haryana provinces using a clinical case definition of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The suspected cases were investigated further in the laboratory to confirm FRS. Air and environment were sampled in different ...
متن کاملNasal polyps, aspirin sensitivity, and late onset asthma are crucial to identify severe asthma. clinicaltrials.gov id : nct01513837
Background Early recognition of severe asthma may improve its management, modify its natural history by better approaching therapy and helps identifying patients resistant to current asthma therapy. Rhinitis and chronic rhinosinusitis are linked to asthma by clinical, epidemiological and similar inflammatory mechanisms which interrelates upper and lower airways. Evidence for high rate of chroni...
متن کاملRhinosinusitis in morbidity registrations in Dutch General Practice: a retro-spective case-control study
BACKGROUND There is only limited accurate data on the epidemiology of rhinosinusitis in primary care. This study was conducted to assess the incidence of acute and chronic rhinosinusitis by analysing data from two Dutch general practice registration projects. Several patient characteristics and diseases are related to the diagnosis rhinosinusitis. METHODS The Continuous Morbidity Registration...
